Ten Tips for Burn Prevention in the Kitchen

  1. Do not leave a cable hanging from the kitchen counter from any appliance.
  2. Always cook dishes on the back burners of the stove and turn pots and pans so that the handles are out of reach of children.
  3. Prevent children from coming into contact with hot oven doors
  4. Do not place a plate with hot food on the table, always place hot drinks as far from the edge of the table as possible. Tablecloths do not belong on tables in households with toddlers.
  5. Never leave prepared food unattended if appliances are on.
  6. Never cook with a child in your arms or in a carrier
  7. Never extinguish hot or burning oil in a pan with water or a water extinguisher. Use a fire blanket, a powder extinguisher, or even soil from a flowerpot.
  8. Prevent children from having access to matches, lighters, and flammable substances, and explain their dangers and purpose to older children.
  9. Instruct older children on safe reheating of food in the microwave – from choosing suitable dishes to the risks of escaping hot steam.
  10. Use quality protective gear when handling hot pots and baking dishes to prevent burning or slipping of handles. Ensure in advance that children are at a safe distance.
