How to provide first aid for burns in the kitchen?

  • Break contact with the source of the burn. Extinguish burning clothing as quickly as possible.
  • Remove clothing from affected body parts, do not tear off adhered fabric. Remove rings, watches, chains, and bracelets that may act as a tourniquet after swelling develops.
  • Cool the affected area (with running water from a shower, immersion in water, or using wet compresses). Do not use direct contact with frozen foods, ice, or snow for cooling.
  • Cool as long as possible — it will relieve pain and prevent deepening of burns. Do not apply any powders, ointments, or creams to the burned area.
  • Cool burned areas only up to a total extent of 5% of the body surface (equivalent to the size of 5 palms of the burned person). Cooling a larger area may lead to hypothermia.
  • Call emergency services (155). Never underestimate the injury and do not delay visiting a doctor.
