These are various aggressive cleaning agents, degreasers for pipes and grills, acids for cleaning metals, or lyes for cleaning drains and various aggressive bleaches. The fumes from these substances are also very dangerous and can cause serious and permanent damage to the respiratory tract. Do not underestimate first aid.
Burns caused by corrosives are serious injuries that can occur when skin or eyes come into contact with chemicals found in many households. Corrosives can include cleaning agents, degreasers, acids, lyes, and other chemicals. These substances can cause severe tissue damage that requires immediate and proper first aid. Always use quality protective gloves and wear full clothing when using these substances in case any liquid splashes or spills on you. Always ensure very good ventilation.
Cleaning drains with a plunger or other lyes is very dangerous. Use gloves and protective goggles or a plexiglass shield. Never exceed the recommended amount and keep in mind that the aggressive substance can bubble up or splash back from the drain at any time. It can also damage the pipes and escape, for example, through a damaged siphon under the sink.
Always securely close unused products with the original cap, store them in a lockable cabinet out of reach of children, and secure them against tipping over. Never transfer them to other containers to prevent confusion. If you must use another container, ensure it is suitable for storing the chemical, is well-sealed, and clearly and visibly labeled with the contents.
First aid for burns from corrosives
Skin
- Remove the source of the burn. If possible, remove contaminated clothing that has come into contact with the corrosive.
- Immediately rinse the affected area with a large amount of cold running water for at least 20 minutes. Never use ice or very cold water.
- Do not attempt to neutralize the acid with a base or vice versa, as this may worsen tissue damage.
- After rinsing, cover the affected area with a sterile bandage or clean cloth.
- Seek medical help immediately, especially if the burn is extensive, deep, or in a sensitive area.
Eyes
- Immediately start rinsing the affected eye with a large amount of clean water or saline solution. Rinse for at least 20 minutes, trying to keep the eye open during rinsing.
- Seek medical help immediately after rinsing or call emergency services. Professional intervention is necessary as corrosives can cause serious eye damage and permanent vision consequences.
- If the affected person is wearing contact lenses, try to remove them during rinsing if it does not cause unnecessary delay.
Inhalation / inhaling fumes
- Move the affected person to fresh air as quickly as possible.
- If the person has breathing difficulties, keep them calm and in a comfortable position. If breathing fails, start resuscitation and call emergency services immediately.
- Even with mild symptoms of inhaling corrosives, it is necessary to seek medical help, as the effects can be delayed and severe.
